Traffic school deadline after a ticket, by state
The deadline to ask for traffic school starts on one of three days: the date on the ticket, the court date printed on it, or a later conviction or letter. Your state decides which, and in five states some courts publish their own. Rules checked October 2026.
4state rules count the deadline from the ticket date; the rest count from a court date or a later notice
Rules checked . Updated .
Three ways the traffic school deadline is counted
The rule decides which day starts the count. In Florida, Utah, Washington and Washington, DC, a fixed number of days runs from the ticket date, so the last day is a date you can work out today. In Arizona, Mississippi and Texas, the deadline is the court date on your citation. In Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri and Tennessee, the window opens later, after the court decides the ticket or the state sends a letter.
States that count days from the ticket date
These rules give a day count and say it runs from the ticket date. In Florida, for example, you choose the course through the county clerk within 30 days of the ticket (Civil Traffic Infractions, Clerk of the Court and Comptroller, Miami-Dade County). Three courts in Texas and Nevada publish a day count of their own where the state rule has none.
For these rules the checker works out the last day from the ticket date you enter. A ticket written on September 10, 2026 in Fort Worth had 21 days, so the window closed on October 1, 2026. Checked after that day, the answer is Not eligible, and the reason names the deadline. Fort Worth's page says a judge must approve a request after day 21.
States where the court date on the citation is the deadline
In Texas you ask for a driving safety course by the answer date on the citation (Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 45A. Justice and Municipal Courts (Subchapter H, Art. 45A.351 to 45A.359)). Arizona's courts want the class finished at least 7 days before the court date, and Mississippi asks by the appearance date. In California, Illinois and North Dakota, the court sets the date and prints it on the notice it sends you.
| State | Deadline | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Arizona | The appearance date on your citation | Frequently Asked Questions for Defensive Driving School Students, Arizona Judicial Branch |
| Mississippi | The appearance date on your citation | Mississippi Legislature, 2016 Regular Session, House Bill 1295 (As Introduced), reprinting Section 63-9-11, Mississippi Code of 1972 |
| Texas | The appearance date on your citation | Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 45A. Justice and Municipal Courts (Subchapter H, Art. 45A.351 to 45A.359) |
| California | Set by your court on the notice | Traffic school, California Courts Self Help Guide |
| Illinois | Set by your court on the notice | Illinois Supreme Court Rules (full PDF linked from illinoiscourts.gov), Rules 529 and 551 |
| North Dakota | Set by your court on the notice | North Dakota Century Code chapter 39-06.1, Operators' licenses: suspensions, revocations, point system |
The checker cannot see your court date, so for these rules it prints the deadline in words and computes no date. Read the date on your citation or courtesy notice.
Windows that open after a conviction or a letter
Some programs start later. In Kentucky a District Court judge refers you to State Traffic School, and you have 30 days to enroll once the court has dealt with the ticket (KY State Traffic School, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (Drive.ky.gov)). Michigan's Department of State mails a letter to eligible drivers, and the 60 days to finish the course run from that letter. Missouri and Tennessee count from the conviction. These are windows to enroll or finish, not a date to ask the court, and the checker labels them that way.
| State | Window | Counted | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kentucky | 30 days | from the conviction | KY State Traffic School, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (Drive.ky.gov) |
| Michigan | 60 days | from a later notice | Basic Driver Improvement Course (BDIC) eligibility, Michigan Department of State |
| Missouri | 60 days | from the conviction | RSMo 302.302, Point system, assessment for violation, assessment of points stayed |
| Tennessee | 90 days | from the conviction | Remove Speeding Points (4-hour traffic school), Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security |
Court deadlines in California, Texas, Florida, Arizona and Nevada
Courts in these five states publish their own steps, and many add a second deadline: the day the course must be finished or the certificate filed. Several California courts give 60 to 90 days from payment to finish. Florida clerks give 60, 90 or 120 days. Pick your court in the checker and its wording replaces the state rule.

States that publish no traffic school deadline
These states run a program but publish no deadline for it: Alaska, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. For them the checker prints "By the date on your citation or notice." In most of them the course takes points off after a conviction, so the date that matters is the one in the letter or notice from the state.
After the traffic school deadline
A missed deadline closes the course in most published rules. A few courts and states publish what happens next:
- Texas: a court may still allow the course after the answer date at its discretion (Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 45A. Justice and Municipal Courts (Subchapter H, Art. 45A.351 to 45A.359)). Houston Municipal Courts lists a discretionary course after the arraignment date at a higher fee.
- Orange County, Florida: the clerk still takes a late election with a $23 late fee.
- Dallas Municipal Court, Texas: after 21 days the amount may be higher or the option may be gone. The court's page does not say what the 21 days count from.
- Washington, DC: a request after day 30 adds a penalty equal to the fine, and after day 60 you are deemed liable (Contest a Minor Moving Violation Ticket, DC DMV).
Without the course, the published routes are to pay the ticket, contest it, or ask for a mitigation hearing where the court holds one. Each leads to a different record. Which to choose is your decision.
